Rebecca…

I met a teenager who was wearing the kind of jeans your grandmother would ask,"did you pay to rip them like that?" Her eyes were bright and hungry to conquer the world. Modeling, acting, and a full-time student ready to hop on a place to Los Angeles for her next modeling gig. How could I not want to meet with her once a week and help her achieve her next goal.

I found out about 'Reel Works', where mentors meet with teens eager to work on their first documentaries, through a friend of mine and fellow Hampton grad, Khalid, via email. I had no idea what to expect or the one-of-a-kind of relationship that I'd be forming with Rebecca that made me appreciate every moment I had with her.

'Brown Genes,' originated from two subjects in Rebecca's life. She merged her experience of growing up in a foster home along with dealing with day to day colorism in high school. Check out the YouTube link above to watch 'Brown Genes'.
